How Do I Verify a Contractors License and Bond?

When getting a pool/spa estimate the first thing you want to consider is whether or not the contractors that you are inviting out to your house are licensed by the state of California.  California has a very strict policy on who can and cannot perform construction work within it’s state lines.  Licensed contractors are required to go through a thorough background check, pass a written test for both Business Law and their individual trade, get required insurance and bonding, and have a minimum of four years experience in the trade which they are getting licensed.  These are only a few things that the state requires, all of which are vital to any construction process being performed correctly and up to the standards set forth by the state.

The easiest way to verify whether a contractor has gone through all of these steps and is legally allowed to practice the trade you are hiring him/her for is to go to the Contractors State License Board website.  (  At the top left of the screen, on the sidebar, you will see a button that says, “Instant License Check”.  Click the link and the following page will ask you to put in the contractor’s information, whether it be a license number, business name, or any of the other selections provided.  Once you have found the contractors information you are looking for, you will be able to view items regarding bond, workers compensation, license status, etc.  If any of the above listed items are not valid or show a status other than current or active, make sure that the contractor has taken care of that before moving forward and allowing him/her to perform the work you are proposing.
